Diary and letters, 1850-1853.

The diary (WA MSS 529) and letters (WA MSS 530), record an 1850 trip from Iowa to the California gold mines, starting when Wilson crossed the Missouri. He describes his life at the mines and his 1851 trip home on the bark Philena to Panama, the ship North America to New Orleans, and up the Mississippi to St. Louis. Wilson continued his journal for an 1853 trip to Oregon, over the Oregon Trail as far as Albany and Marysville. The diary records the weather, conditions of the roads, camps, distances, and graves.
